Clinical interests
One of his clinical and scientific interests is using cryosurgery to treat endobronchial tumours. This pioneering method significantly improves quality of life and prolongs survival in patients with advanced lung cancer. This technology also allows healthcare professionals to avoid major surgery in patients with other forms of endobronchial tumours. He has a clinical interest in treating patients with complex thoracic surgical problems or with complications from previous surgery including reconstructive chest wall surgery after previous interventions for congenital and cardiac pathology. Education and experienceMr Vladimir Anikin received training in thoracic surgical oncology at the P A Hertzen Cancer Research Institute in Moscow in the early 1980s. During his training he defended a thesis entitled 'Multiple Primary Tumours of the Lung' and published a book on the subject. Subsequently, he worked as a thoracic and general surgeon in the north of Russia. He was appointed as a senior researcher in the Medical Radiological Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences with the main clinical focus of oesophageal surgery and continued in this post until his move to the UK. After moving to the United Kingdom in the early 1990s, he worked at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. He was appointed as a consultant in the Bradford Royal Infirmary in 2000 and then also at the Leeds General Infirmary. Since 2007 he has been as consultant thoracic surgeon at Harefield Hospital. |
